Members of Kokoro perform works by three great 20th century composers. Shostakovich’s First Piano Trio is an early work showing the prodigious skills of the 17-year-old Russian composer, whilst Contrasts by the Hungarian composer Bartok was conceived for the combined talents of the jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman, the violinist Joseph Szigeti and Bartok himself. To complete the programme one of the 20th century’s most spiritual and visionary works written by the French composer Olivier Messiaen whilst incarcerated in a German prisoner of war camp. At the premiere by the composer and three fellow prisoners it was performed to huge audience of prisoner and guards.
