John Murphy

What inspired you to take up the viola?
Curiosity, I wasn't entirely sure what it was. I was given the choice of the violin, the viola or the cello so I chose the viola.

When did you join the BSO?
Just over a year ago now in 2009.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
The fantastic repertoire, travelling and the musicians I work with.

What are the challenges of playing the viola?
Like any string instrument playing in tune but the viola is also very physically demanding because of its size.

Name a musical personality living or dead you would most like to meet?
Any of the great composers like Bach, Mozart or Beethoven.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? What are your hobbies?
I love listening to music, reading, films, photography, drawing, running and cycling.

What do you like most about living on the South Coast?
The wonderful scenery and being by the sea.

What was your earliest musical experience?
Probably a sing-song in a family get together.

Do you play any other instruments?
No, well, the piano very badly.

What would you do if you weren’t a musician?
I've no idea, but probably something creative.

Would you like to swap instruments and play something else in the orchestra?
I wouldn't mind having a go on a percussion instrument.

Are you from a musical family?
Yes.

Does your family come to see you play in concerts?
No, my family doesn’t live close by.

The orchestra regularly travels lot on the coach. Do musicians tend socialise together according to their instrument?
Not really.

What’s your favourite place to eat for a pre-concert meal?
Anywhere that has a veggie option.
